Living with Post Viral Cerebellar Syndrome and Ataxia

Hello.

My name is Laura and I live in a small conservation village in the West of Scotland. During a period, just five years ago, when I was approaching my twenty-fourth birthday, I was brought into a collision course with a nasty, viral infection. This very badly affected my cerebellum and resulted in my present condition which requires a considerable degree of reliance on other individuals for my day to day activities, although it is slowly progressing.

I was very much like any other young twenty-three year old, working hard, regularly clubbing, going on foreign holidays, driving here and driving there and then, POW! No eyesight, no speech and really, most upsettingly of all, no power to manipulate my arms and legs. I am pleased though, to report that most of my eyesight, some of my speech and co-ordination has improved somewhat and this has uplifted my spirits considerably.

Within this website I have unfolded the story relating to this serious intrusion into my life and hope it will, through the stories and images, motivate any other person afflicted with this syndrome, to realise you can overcome even desperate difficulties of the type I have encountered. There are some nice ups, but also unfortunately, some dreadful downs.

Best wishes to everyone.
